The problem

Good health relies on more than just the right combinations of medicines and visits to the doctor. It also relies on a range of factors including economic status, environmental surroundings, sexual preferences, and political will. In India, this web of connections has hindered the right to health for women and children. Rates of HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and Reproductive Tract Infections (RTI) are persistently high, especially in rural areas where access to healthcare is limited.

PHRII HAS DEVELOPED A THREE-FOLD APPROACH TO COMBATING THESE HEALTH SHORTAGES

pROBLEM 1: Routine CARE

Indian women often worry about themselves last. They suffer in silence, waiting until a problem is severe before seeking medical attention. There is very little emphasis on routine screenings or regular reproductive health check-ups, especially if it will be a financial burden on the family.  We provide free and inexpensive care as well as awareness programs to stress the importance of health.

pROBLEM 2: gEOGRAPHY

There are clear regional differences in access to healthcare. Immediate costs as well as opportunity costs contribute to a woman's ability to seek medical care. Often times, women cannot afford to lose a day's worth of wages or additional expenses on transportation to the doctor's office.  We decided that if they cannot come to us, we should go to them.

 pROBLEM 3: DATA

We cannot develop a solution if we do not have a clear understanding of the problem. The various factors that contribute to maintaining good health must be illustrated. In order to decode exactly why and where healthcare is lacking, it is important to develop a systematic understanding of the problem. This is why we conduct research. We collect and analyze data. In this way, we are able to provide evidence-based care.
